For me, the performance aspects that we create in the house space are the thing that will tie the work together the most. Otherwise, it amounts to merely stuffing art works into a house like a blank box, and that’s no different from showing in an art gallery. The idea of really working site-specifically is so crucial. I would like to invest the time and the energy to really learn from, be sensitive to and find the stories, cracks and context that make our work inherently tied to this space, not only bringing the works together but asking questions about what it means to be here, now, in Beijing or in Zürich—-and like our ‘overseas’ question, how those things flow from and identify with whatever histories exist there. This is also tied to the boundaries between what is “regular daily life” (in a home) and the artistic ideas (an abstraction of what is home) that we would like to show. And that is why we should be faithful to this importance of CONTEXT.
This all leads back to the performance. What I like about performance is the time-based aspect, the active possibilities it has for engaging with a performance, but in pursuit of a way that is not merely passive, as in one “watching” a movie or “sitting through” a theatre piece. What i thought could be great about performance in our house space is that it interacts with space, and creates all sorts of angles for viewing that ask something of the viewer, that he choose to watch or participate, interact or watch from different parts of the room, follow a performer through a space or not. i like very much this idea that in the house, the relationship between the audience and performers is very different. For me it is the strongest point where the three of us could work together. It is the same question we can ask of ourselves as collaborators. How do the different spaces work together? What makes these spaces a home? It’s not just the architecture, but it’s the “living in”, the time together and the finding of what is comfortable and home for you. The furniture, the works we put into the spaces, and the way of navigating through it—-all of these things should work together. Because if it were an empty house, it would not be so different from an art gallery, and an “unlived in” mock-up of a home may not be so different from an ikea display…
