sorry, i’ve just been listening to this a lot these days, i can’t get over it…ha! language will inevitably play a big role in our work over the next few years, and what is amazing to me about jin is that he has basically taken the ambivalence of the Chinese-American identity, down to not being able to read/write Chinese, and empowered it by giving it a voice. it’s amazing to see all these stereotypes of chinese culture (other songs like “instant noodle”, “yum dom cha”, “1997” and “HK superstar”) boiled down into this format, which employs at the same time all the riffs and tricks of hiphop (“tick tock and ya don’t stop…”).
