sorry, i’ve just been listening to this a lot these days, i can’t get over it…ha! language will inevitably play a big role in our work over the next few years, and what is amazing to me about jin is that he has basically taken the ambivalence of the Chinese-American identity, down to not being able to read/write Chinese, and empowered it by giving it a voice. it’s amazing to see all these stereotypes of chinese culture (other songs like “instant noodle”, “yum dom cha”, “1997” and “HK superstar”) boiled down into this format, which employs at the same time all the riffs and tricks of hiphop (“tick tock and ya don’t stop…”).

WOW!!! I like this. I don’t understand everything, but it’s great. I don’t know what he looks like, but I imagine this ABC kid, maybe it is one of this kind Paul was talking about. How ols is Jin? Is he popular in America?
it’s funny. i was recently at the cocorosie concert in zurich and the concert was amazing. there was this incredible bibboxer that could do amazing stuff with his voice. i got inspired by that and it would be so cool if we could have life music for our performence/exhibition event with hip hop and bibboxing playing with language, sound and noices of the human body.
and yes, it is quite a phenomen of overseas people to have a weired relationship to their mother tongue. there is also a lot of people that don’t speak their native or let’s say the language of their parents anymore. for example me, chinese was the first language that i learned and in that way it can be considered as mother tongue but in the course of time and because of the relationship I have with my parents, I never developed my chinese further than a kid of 4 years old (that’s more or less the time when i started to speak more and more german) and even I think I forgot a lot. So if you talk about the language that I master the best would be the mother tongue than that would be swissgerman. But I still don’t consider chinese as a foreigne language like you would learn it later on top of your nativ language.
So yes, I think it is a issue that mirrors the dual identity of overseas people and can be explored in our work in various ways.
