何颖雅 sketches winter 09: 聋哑的
questions:
If we start without oral language, where does culture take us?
What forms of access can be granted by sharing a meal together?
Among strangers, what routes does “the natural” take?
What is Chinese food?
[will post an “audio” element tomorrow… also can send larger-resolution images by e-mail for your meeting]

i think this derailing of trying to describe sign language via text is incredibly interesting… wondering if it will be important for what i would like to do. i meant by the removal of oral language to include the removal of sign language, for while it is not literally oral, it does represent a more concretely direct sign to signal relationship as the other formal languages. (of course meaning and its relationship to language is a whole other issue we could get into…) but i suppose there is something sparking an interest for me about the elimination of that kind of sense, to amplify the way we relate in other ways, exploring the inadequacies of communication in relationship to culture and/or cultural transmission, the whole inadequacy of the idea of “a” culture.
haven’t seen the film you mentioned, but should try to look it up. but yes, ‘code inconnu’ is one of my favourite films, and the opening closing scenes with the deaf children are so incredibly powerful…
